CAREERS
STUDIO ENGINEER
Location: Beeple Studios, Charleston, SC
Type: Full-time, on-site
JOB DESCRIPTION
Beeple Studios is seeking a highly resourceful, hands-on Studio Engineer to help design, build, program, troubleshoot, and complete ambitious physical and digital projects.
This is a broad technical role crossing mechanical design, hardware, software, fabrication, electronics, automation, interactive systems, and AI-assisted workflows. The Studio Engineer will help take projects from early concepts through development, final production, installation, and continued operation.
A formal engineering degree is welcome but not required. Demonstrated technical ability, practical judgment, completed project work, and a strong problem-solving mindset are more important than a specific educational background.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop physical and digital projects from concept through final production
- Create parametric 3D models, assemblies, drawings, and production-ready files
- Design and build parts, mechanisms, fixtures, enclosures, and complete assemblies
- Integrate computers, displays, motors, sensors, controllers, and electronics
- Write or modify basic software, scripts, and device-control systems
- Develop or support interactive systems using tools such as TouchDesigner
- Use AI tools for coding, research, documentation, design, and troubleshooting
- Work with tools such as Cursor, OpenAI Codex, Claude Code, or similar platforms
- Build prototypes and refine successful concepts into durable finished products
- Research materials, components, vendors, and technical approaches
- Test, document, install, maintain, and troubleshoot completed systems
- Work with artists, fabricators, programmers, engineers, and outside vendors
RECOMMENDED EXPERIENCE
Strong candidates will have experience in several of the following areas. We do not expect every applicant to have all of them.
- Mechanical Design and Fabrication
- Parametric 3D modeling using CATIA, SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Onshape, Inventor, or similar software
- Designing parts and assemblies for fabrication, installation, maintenance, and real-world use
- 3D printing, CNC machining, laser cutting, vacuum forming, or related processes
- Working with motors, bearings, gears, fasteners, structures, and mechanical assemblies
- Hands-on assembly, modification, repair, and troubleshooting
- Software and Interactive Systems
- Basic experience with Python, JavaScript, C++, or similar languages
- TouchDesigner or another real-time visual or interactive platform
- Connecting software to sensors, motors, displays, APIs, databases, or control systems
- Building small internal tools, automations, test utilities, or device interfaces
- Familiarity with source control and modern development workflows
- Hardware and Electronics
- Basic electronics, wiring, soldering, and electrical troubleshooting
- Arduino, Raspberry Pi, NVIDIA Jetson, or similar platforms
- Motors, servos, sensors, relays, power supplies, networking, and control hardware
- Robotics, automation, mechatronics, interactive installations, or custom AV systems
- AI-Assisted Technical Work
- Experience with Cursor, OpenAI Codex, Claude Code, or similar AI coding tools
- Using AI to understand code, create utilities, debug problems, research solutions, and produce documentation
- Ability to test and validate AI-generated work rather than relying on it without review
- What We Are Looking For
- Strong general technical aptitude
- Practical and persistent problem-solving skills
- Ability to learn unfamiliar tools quickly
- Comfort working across hardware, software, fabrication, and mechanical systems
- Ability to turn loosely defined goals into workable technical plans
- Good judgment about when to prototype quickly and when to build a robust final solution
- Clear communication, organization, and attention to detail
- Ability to work independently and take ownership through completion
- A positive and adaptable attitude when projects change or initial approaches fail
EDUCATION
A degree in engineering, computer science, industrial design, product design, creative technology, or a related field may be helpful but is not required.
Relevant professional experience, personal projects, machines, installations, software, electronics, fabrication work, or other demonstrated technical accomplishments may be equally valuable.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
